There’s nothing better than leaving the salon with fresh, glossy color. But if you’ve ever noticed your color fading, getting dull, or turning brassy faster than expected, you’re not alone. The good news is there are simple things you can do to keep your color looking vibrant for weeks longer.
Here are some of the best ways to maintain your hair color between salon appointments.
1. Wait Before Washing Your Hair
After getting your hair colored, it’s best to wait 24–48 hours before washing it. This allows the color to fully settle into the hair cuticle and helps prevent premature fading.
Washing your hair too soon can cause the color to fade faster, especially with reds, brunettes, and dimensional blondes.
2. Use Professional Color-Safe Products
One of the biggest factors in how long your color lasts is the shampoo and conditioner you use at home.
Look for products that are:
• Designed for color-treated hair
• Moisturizing and gentle
Professional salon products are formulated to protect color molecules while keeping your hair healthy and hydrated.
3. Wash Your Hair Less Often
The more often you wash your hair, the faster your color will fade. If possible, try to wash your hair 2–3 times per week instead of daily.
Using dry shampoo between washes can help extend the life of both your color and your style, but be careful not to over do it.
4. Turn Down the Water Temperature
Hot water opens the hair cuticle and allows color to escape, which can cause your hair color to fade faster.
Washing your hair with lukewarm or cooler water helps keep the cuticle sealed and preserves the richness of your color.
5. Protect Your Hair From Heat
Heat styling tools like curling irons, straighteners, and blow dryers can contribute to color fading and dryness.
Always use a heat protectant spray before styling to help shield your hair from damage and maintain shine.
6. Use a Gloss or Toner Between Appointments
A gloss or toner service can refresh your color between full appointments. These treatments add shine, neutralize unwanted tones, and revive the richness of your color without a full color service.
Many clients schedule gloss appointments every 6–8 weeks to keep their color looking fresh.
7. Protect Your Hair From Sun and Pool Water
UV rays, chlorine, and salt water can all affect hair color. When spending time outside or swimming, try to:
• Wear a hat in direct sun
• Wet your hair with clean water before entering the pool
• Use protective leave-in products
This helps reduce the amount of color fading caused by environmental exposure.
8. Healthy Hair Holds Color Better
The healthier your hair is, the better it holds color. Regular trims, conditioning treatments, and proper home care help keep the hair cuticle smooth so color stays vibrant longer.
When your hair is well cared for, your color will look shinier, richer, and last much longer between appointments.
Beautiful color shouldn’t disappear after just a few washes. With the right care and products, you can keep your hair looking fresh, vibrant, and salon-worthy for weeks.
